There are about 10 species of burdock (burdock) that are common in the temperate zone of Eurasia. In Russia, burdock is found in all areas except the Arctic. It grows mostly near housing, in garbage places, wastelands, along roads, in vegetable gardens, along river banks, on the edges of forests, sometimes in fields. Most common gossamer burdock (felt) and burdock.

Annoying burdocks, which can be difficult to remove from clothing, are burdock buds, equipped with tough, hook-shaped leaves designed just to hook on and spread the seeds of the plant.

Different types of burdock differ little from each other, namely: the size of the plant, the size and pubescence of the baskets, the structure and shape of the leaves of the wrapper.

Burdock hooks served as a model for people to make Velcro fasteners. By the way, in English-speaking countries, these clasps are called Burdock, which, in translation, just gives a burdock. And in our country, burdock is sometimes called "dogs" for their strong grip. No wonder there is an expression - stuck like a burdock.

Thanks to tenacious fruits, burdocks settled along roads, paths, pastures, garbage dumps and in all other places where they have someone to cling to. The only exception is oak burdock or forest, which grows in forests, mainly deciduous, but even there he chooses edges, clearings, ravines.

Burdocks are biennial plants, in the first year they give a rosette of leaves, in the second they bloom, bear fruit and die. They absorb so many nutrients from the soil, especially potassium salts, that potash was burned from dry stalks of burdock, which was used in the household as an alkali, for example, for washing. And as a fertilizer, especially for acidic soils, burdock ash is very useful.

Under the huge rough leaves of burdocks there is always a shadow. Under them, all other weeds die, except that the nettle survives, but even that bypasses the burdock from all sides, not approaching the stem. In the shade of large leaves it is damp and warm, all kinds of small animals settle there - mice, frogs, toads. In places with a mild climate, beautiful large (shell up to 6 cm in diameter) grape snails often live under burdock. Andersen even has a tale about snails that lived in an abandoned castle under burdock and were very proud that their ancestors were served on a silver platter. True, the snails did not really know what this meant, but they were very proud.

In Japan, burdock has long acquired the status of a cultivated vegetable plant, where, under the name Gobo, it is grown to make a popular side dish for meat and fish, as well as soups from its roots. A drink that replaces coffee, as well as jam, meatballs, cakes, healing oil - all this can be prepared from burdock. Burdock, or burdock, is a good honey plant.

Let us clarify right away that due to minor botanical differences, burdocks are almost never identified by species by the population and are used indiscriminately, especially since non-flowering plants are almost indistinguishable in general.

Roots spider burdock(in this species, the baskets are covered with cobweb hairs, as if spiders settled on them, and the leaves below with cobweb pubescence) are more bitter. By the way, in the Moscow region this is the main type of burdock. Burdock, which, in fact, botanists call burdock, is less common, and burdock with baskets 1.5-2 cm in diameter even less frequently. burdock forest or oaky and quite rare.

The Japanese cultivate and eat burdock. But burdock is also edible. Its roots, young stems and young leaves are boiled and fried as a vegetable or used to make soups.

Burdock seeds contain a large amount of oil and are readily eaten by birds. Sometimes even burdock heads are specially harvested for food for domestic and ornamental birds.

You have probably heard about the use of burdock oil to strengthen hair. Burdock oil, although it is called burdock, is not obtained entirely from burdock. For its preparation, chopped burdock root is infused in olive oil, so burdock does not belong to oil plants. A decoction of burdock leaves was used to rinse the head and for various skin diseases. The use of a decoction, like burdock oil, strengthens the hair and improves their growth.

The large amount of inulin in burdock roots allows it to be used to produce sugar. True, sugar will turn out not familiar to us, but fruit. Fructose or fruit sugar is 1.5 times sweeter than sucrose, which is obtained from beets and sugar cane. Fructose is not harmful to diabetics, but its use is hindered by two reasons - the high cost of obtaining and high hygroscopicity. In the root of burdock large inulin up to 27%, burdock small - only 19%. It accumulates in the autumn of the first year, and is consumed very quickly in the spring. In order to obtain fructose from inulin, it must be hydrolyzed, that is, heated in the presence of acid. In this case, the long inulin molecule breaks down into fructose molecules. Burdock is usually not used to obtain fructose, but it is quite possible to make jam from it. To do this, finely chopped root is boiled with acidic substances - sorrel, vinegar, sour milk, very acidic fruits. Of course, only young and soft autumn roots of the first year are eaten. You can collect them in the spring, but only before the start of the growth of the flower arrow.

Burdock root acts as a diuretic, mild choleretic, improves the activity of the pancreas, and increases the production of not only insulin, but also digestive enzymes. Under the influence of burdock root, the deposition of glycogen in the liver increases, it is useful for diabetics. In addition, the infusion and decoction of burdock root also has a diaphoretic effect.

Medicinal properties. Greater burdock root preparations exhibit a diuretic, diaphoretic, moderately analgesic and choleretic effect, somewhat stimulate the formation of pancreatic enzymes, are a mild laxative and dermatotonic, and improve skin condition. They have anti-allergic, antimicrobial, antiseptic and disinfectant effects, eliminate itching.

A decoction of the root is prescribed for gout, inflammatory diseases of the kidneys, cholelithiasis and urolithiasis, gastritis and colitis, rickets, hemorrhoids and rheumatism. Along with the improvement in the general condition of patients, blood counts are normalized, the excretion of urine, uric acid and urea increases, inflammation from the stomach and colon disappears, pain decreases, bowel emptying improves. To enhance the anti-diabetic effect, burdock is combined with bean pods and blueberry leaves. In the treatment of rashes, itching, eczema, furunculosis and other skin diseases, the decoction is used not only inside, but also in the form of lotions. An infusion of burdock root in almond or olive oil (burdock oil) is used to strengthen hair and for baldness. A decoction serves the same purpose.

Dosage forms, method of administration and doses. A decoction of large burdock root: 10 g (1 tablespoon) of the raw material is placed in an enamel bowl, poured into 200 ml of hot boiled water, covered with a lid and heated in a water bath with frequent stirring for 30 minutes, cooled at room temperature for 10 minutes and filtered, the remaining raw materials are pressed. The volume of the resulting broth is adjusted with boiled water to 200 ml. The prepared broth is stored in a cool place for no more than 2 days. Take in a warm form, 1/2 cup 2-3 times a day.

Collection and drying of burdock roots. Medicinal raw materials are burdock roots, which are dug up in September-October. The roots of the first year of life are juicy and fleshy, the second year - woody and unsuitable for medicinal purposes. The dug roots are cleaned from the ground, washed in water and the aerial parts are cut off at the root neck. Then they remove the skin from them, cut into pieces 10-15 cm long, and cut the thick ones along. Dry in the open air or in well-ventilated areas, dry in a dryer at a temperature of 45-50 ° C. The shelf life of the roots is 5 years. Dried roots are grayish-brown on the outside, pale gray on the break. The finished raw material breaks, not bends. The raw material has a slight peculiar smell, a sweetish taste with a feeling of sliminess.

Chemical composition. Burdock roots contain inulin (up to 45%), essential bardan oil (up to 0.17%), tannins, bitter and fat-like substances, mineral salts, organic acids (coffee, malic, citric), protein (up to 12%), sugar, B vitamins, a lot of ascorbic acid. The seeds contained arctin glycoside and fatty oil (up to 20%); in the leaves - essential oil, mucus, tannins, ascorbic acid, carotene.

Topic: An interesting plant is burdock.

Target: investigate why the burdock is prickly?

Tasks:

  • Find out what kind of plant it is?

  • Where does it grow?

  • Medicinal value?
Hypothesis: Perhaps he needs spines in order to protect himself from insects.

I got information from my parents and on the Internet.

This plant grows in Europe, USA and Canada. Its second name is large burdock, as it has very large leaves. Burdock is hard to miss, it stands out among other plants with its large size and bright pink flowers.

It grows in wastelands, in ditches. Forms large thickets.

Burdock is not only a useful and medicinal plant, but also an edible plant.

In Siberia and the Caucasus, burdock has long been considered a vegetable plant. And in Japan it is grown in the beds and it is called there - dovo . The young leaves and petioles are edible and are very tasty when young.

Medicinal preparations are made from burdock roots. They help heal wounds. They treat both the stomach and intestines.

In the people, this plant is considered obsessive for its ability to cling to clothes. I've never had to take spiky balls out of my clothes, have you guys?

Why is the burdock prickly? Here's what I learned in the encyclopedia "Why".

It's just that the seeds of this plant travel like that, move to new places. In the thicket it is difficult to break through to the light.

That's just so that the burdock babies do not die, the seeds go on their way. But they have no legs, no wings: what to do? So they adapted to travel on other people's legs. A horse will pass, catch a prickly ball on horse hair - and go.

Somewhere, the seeds will unhook from the horse's hair and fall to the ground. And on goats, and on elks, burdock "dogs" "ride", and, of course, on dogs. That's why burdock thorns - hooks.

By the way, the seeds of other plants also travel. The wind will pick up the seeds - dandelion parachutes and carry them. The wind also helps the birch, the maple, and the Christmas tree - their flying seeds spin like helicopters and fly far, far away.

Well, what if the seeds are non-volatile? And non-spiny? Birds and animals come to the rescue here. They will peck and eat fruits, they will drop seeds. So they will spread throughout the forest.

And there are plants that shoot their seeds! For example, a mad cucumber. The fruits of this overseas cucumber really look like small cucumbers. Such a “cucumber” will ripen, and it is worth touching it a little, as it will immediately shoot with seeds. His seeds are wet, sticky - whoever hits him will take them with him. Then the seeds dry up and fall off.

From the encyclopedia "Why"

Conclusions:

My hypothesis was not confirmed. The burdock needs thorns to travel and grow in different places, otherwise it simply cannot survive.

Burdock has medicinal value.

At the dug out rhizome, remove the aerial part, then carefully clean it from the ground with a stiff brush. Do not immediately rinse the raw material in cold water, first it must be dried well. Be sure to cut off the small roots and cut out the rotten places of the underground organ of the plant.. Cut large specimens into small pieces and dry in the attic or near the battery, regularly ventilating the room.
